Hi, this is Bill O’Hanlon. Years ago, I was painfully shy.
I became a therapist and was fine one-on-one, but in groups
I would become anxious and, if I ever had to speak, my
voice would shake with fear. I never imagined I would end
up traveling the world doing public speaking.
Here’s what happened. I became passionate about a different
approach to therapy. Instead of delving so much into
people’s wounds, hurts, traumas and history, I found it was
much more empowering to help people discover their
strengths and resilience. I studied with the late
psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson, M.D., who was also
oriented to discovering people’s resources, and I suddenly
wanted to tell everyone I knew about this new and better
way to help people.
I began working in a community mental health center. I
loved working with my clients and most of my colleagues,
but I found myself getting upset by some comments from some
of my other colleagues. They would offhandedly say things
like: “People don’t really want to change when they come to
therapy. They are just playing games.” Or “People like to
be miserable.” Or “My patients are too damaged. They will
never change.” I was dismayed. If they thought this way,
why did they stay in the field of therapy, which to me was
all about helping people reduce suffering and bring about
changes in their lives? But I was a new therapist and I
knew they would never listen to me; they only listened to
the “experts.”
I was committed to learning everything I could about the
change process, and although I was relatively poverty
stricken, still paying off my student loans and trying to
survive on a community mental health center’s paycheck, I
attended every workshop and continuing education event I
could. I loved learning new things and my clients benefited
as I discovered more and more things that helped.
One day I attended a workshop that was two hours drive
away. It was about a therapy method that I had been
studying for a while. The presenter was a psychiatrist and
I convinced a friend to drive with me to save on gas. I was
embarrassed about bringing my friend when the presenter
turned out not to know his material and it was clear he
hadn’t prepared. I ranted to my friend all the way home
that I could have done twice as good a job for half the
price. When my friend dropped me off at home (glad to hear
the last of my ranting, I am sure), I continued grousing to
my roommate and best friend Michael. Michael listened for a
while, then challenged me: “If you think you can do a
better job, why don’t you? Let’s set up a workshop and you
can teach the same topic for half the price.” I stammered
some excuse, but Michael wasn’t going to let me off the
hook. To make a long story short, I ended up teaching
workshops. Terrified at first and not very good. Clueless
about how to present my information effectively, but
gradually working it all out. These days, I travel several
times a month and get paid a good fee to speak all over the
world.
My passion to make a difference in the world overcame my
anxiety and cluelessness. I became one of those “experts”
my discouraging colleagues began to listen to. I changed
the world (well, at least my little corner of it). And, to
my surprise, I began to make some significant money doing
what I loved and was passionate about.
